How to ask for money you’re owed, politely
Polite ways to ask a customer, friend or relative to repay a debt, with ready WhatsApp messages for before the due date, on the day and after a delay.
Many people lose money because they feel too awkward to ask for it. Asking is nothing to be ashamed of, but the way you ask makes the difference. Here are ideas and messages that help.
Agree on a date from the start
“Pay me back at the end of the month” is much easier than “When will you pay me?” two months later. When there is a date, a reminder is a normal thing, not an accusation.
Remind before, not after
A kind message a day before the date is better than an upset one two weeks late.
Ready messages
A day before:
Hi Abu Khaled 🌷 just a reminder that tomorrow is the date we agreed for the 150 USD. Thanks a lot.
On the day:
Good morning, today is the date for the 150 USD. If something is holding you up, just tell me and we’ll work it out. Thank you.
After a delay:
Hi, I hope all is well. It’s been a week since the date for the amount. I’ve sent you the statement to look at, and if you’d like to split it into payments, that’s fine.
Let the statement talk
Instead of saying “you owe me this much”, send the statement: every entry with its date. Clear numbers save the argument.
Partial payments
If they can’t pay it all, accept part and record it. In haeifin a partial payment is recorded, and the app tells you how much is left.
The app reminds you, not them
In haeifin the reminder reaches you, not the customer. The message is ready, and you decide whether to send it. Nothing is ever sent on its own.
Try haeifin: a debt book on your phone, in several currencies, offline. The first month is on us.
